What Actually Happens at a Dental Cleaning

Dental hygienist performing a professional cleaning

If it has been a few years since your last checkup, the unknown is often the hardest part. Here is exactly what a routine visit at our Lilburn office looks like.

Health history and x-rays

We review your medical history and current medications first, because both affect your gums, saliva, and healing. Digital x-rays follow when they are due — they use a fraction of the radiation of older film and show what the eye cannot: decay between teeth and bone levels around the roots.

The cleaning itself

Your hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar along the gumline with hand instruments and an ultrasonic scaler, then polishes and flosses. Sensitive spots are normal — tell your hygienist and they will adjust.

The exam and the plan

Dr. Desai checks each tooth and existing restoration, measures gum health, and performs an oral cancer screening. If something needs attention, you will see it on screen and hear the options — including the option to wait and watch when that is reasonable.
