Dental advice gets repeated for years even when it is incomplete. Here are six beliefs we regularly clarify with patients in our Lilburn office.
Myths about cavities
Myth: If a tooth does not hurt, it is healthy. Early cavities and gum disease are often painless. Myth: Only sugar causes cavities. Bacteria also use starches, and frequent snacking keeps the mouth acidic longer.
- Sugar-free does not always mean acid-free
- Baby teeth still need treatment and prevention
- A filling cannot repair itself once decay creates a hole
Myths about daily care
Myth: Bleeding means you should stop flossing. Usually it means inflamed gums need more consistent, gentle cleaning. Myth: Brushing harder cleans better. Heavy pressure can wear enamel and contribute to recession.
- Use soft bristles
- Brush for two minutes, not with extra force
- Clean between teeth once each day
Myths about whitening
Myth: Every stain will whiten. Crowns, fillings, and veneers do not change shade, and internal discoloration may need a different cosmetic approach. An exam helps identify the safest option.
