What to Expect After a Tooth Extraction

August 31, 2026 · 4 min read

Dental instruments prepared for tooth extraction care

The first few days after an extraction are about protecting the healing socket. Follow your individual instructions first; these general reminders explain why the details matter.

The first 24 hours

Bite on gauze as directed and avoid disturbing the socket. A stable blood clot protects the bone and is essential for comfortable healing.

  • Do not smoke, vape, spit forcefully, or use a straw
  • Choose cool, soft foods
  • Rest with your head elevated
  • Use medication only as directed

The next several days

Mild swelling and soreness commonly peak during the first two to three days and then improve. After the first day, gentle warm salt-water rinses can keep the area clean. Brush nearby teeth carefully without scrubbing the socket.

When to call

Contact us for bleeding that will not slow, fever, worsening swelling, a bad taste with drainage, or severe pain that increases after initially improving. Trouble breathing or swallowing requires emergency care.
