Knowing what kind of stain you have points to the treatment that will actually work.
Surface (extrinsic) stains
Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco stain the enamel surface. Cleanings and whitening usually remove them.
Deep (intrinsic) stains
Injury, some medications or excess fluoride in childhood can discolour teeth from inside. Bonding or veneers are often better choices.
Prevention
- Rinse with water after dark drinks
- Use a straw for iced coffee or tea
- Keep regular cleanings
