Losing Baby Teeth: What Parents Should Know

May 11, 2026 · 3 min read

Baby teeth illustration

Exfoliation is the natural shedding of baby teeth, usually starting around age six.

Typical timeline

Lower front teeth usually go first, and the last baby molars often fall out around ages 10–12.

What is normal

Wiggly teeth, a little bleeding, and adult teeth coming in behind baby teeth (sometimes called 'shark teeth') are common and often sort themselves out.

When to call

  • A baby tooth is very loose but will not come out after months
  • An adult tooth is fully in behind a baby tooth that is not loose
  • Pain, swelling, or teeth lost much earlier than expected
