Three Ways to Prevent Sensitivity After Whitening

March 30, 2026 · 3 min read

Teeth whitening

Whitening gels temporarily open tiny pores in enamel, which can make teeth sensitive for a day or two.

1. Prepare your teeth

Use a sensitivity toothpaste with potassium nitrate for two weeks before whitening.

2. Follow the directions

Do not leave gel on longer than instructed. Spacing out sessions helps.

3. Be gentle afterward

Avoid very hot, cold or acidic food and drinks for 24–48 hours and use lukewarm water when brushing.
