There is no single interval that fits every mouth. Your recommended schedule reflects how quickly tartar builds and how much support your gums and teeth need.
Why six months is common
For many people with healthy gums and a low cavity risk, twice-yearly visits allow the team to remove tartar and spot small changes before they become uncomfortable or expensive.
Who may need more frequent care
People with a history of periodontal disease often benefit from maintenance every three or four months. Dry mouth, smoking, diabetes, orthodontic appliances, frequent cavities, and limited dexterity can also change the recommendation.
- Past gum disease or bone loss
- Heavy tartar buildup
- Medications that reduce saliva
- Medical conditions affecting oral health
Your interval can change
A cleaning schedule is not permanent. Improved gum measurements and home care may lengthen it, while new inflammation or medical changes may call for closer monitoring.
