Dental Emergencies: What to Do in the First Hour

June 15, 2026 · 4 min read

Dental instruments prepared for urgent treatment

Call our Lilburn office at 770.979.3760 as soon as you can. While you're on the way, these steps protect the tooth.

Knocked-out permanent tooth

Time matters most here — a tooth replanted within 30 to 60 minutes has the best chance.

  • Pick the tooth up by the crown, never the root.
  • Rinse gently with milk or saline if dirty — do not scrub.
  • Place it back in the socket if you can, and bite on gauze to hold it.
  • Otherwise keep it in milk (not water) and come straight in.

Cracked tooth, lost filling, or lost crown

Rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress outside the cheek for swelling. A lost crown can be temporarily reseated with drugstore dental cement — never household glue. Avoid chewing on that side until we see you.

Swelling, fever, or severe pain

Facial swelling with fever can signal a spreading infection and needs same-day attention. If swelling affects your breathing or swallowing, go to the emergency room.
